Oscoda Township Volunteer Fire Department Overview
The Oscoda Township Volunteer Fire Department consists of thirty-one volunteers from the Oscoda/AuSable communities. The command structure of the Fire Department includes the Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain and two Lieutenants. The Oscoda Fire Department has the main station located in the downtown business district of Oscoda.
The Oscoda Fire Department provides complete fire and rescue protection for the Townships of Oscoda, AuSable and contracts for part of Wilber Township. Members of the Oscoda Fire Department are highly trained in the areas of fire fighting, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials, arson investigation, first aid and CPR, aircraft crash rescue, fire prevention, forest fire operations, and fire prevention techniques.
The Department has two State Certified Fire Instructors who provide basic and advanced training for members of all Iosco County Fire Departments. Currently, there are three Police Officers from the Oscoda Township Police Department who are also members of the Fire Department.
The Fire Department has recently obtained a snowmobile and rescue sled and provides snow-mobile rescue for all of Iosco County. The Oscoda Fire Department is involved in a Mutual Aid Agreement with all surrounding Fire Departments including Alcona County.
The Oscoda Fire Department participates in a yearly fire prevention program with the School District including Fire Department Volunteers attending the schools every fall with fire prevention materials and safety information.

Emergency Dispatch Services
The population and government units of Iosco County depend upon eight separate volunteer fire departments, interconnected by a Mutual Aid Agreement that includes membership from neighboring Ogemaw County as well. An enhanced 911 (E911) Authority was established and became operational In April of 1996. The Authority is made up of representatives from the State Police, Sheriffs Department, City of East Tawas, Tawas Police Authority, Oscoda Township Police Department, City of Tawas City, County Board of Commissioners, East Tawas Fire Department, and Oscoda Township Fire Department. The 911 facility is located northeast of East Tawas on US-23 in Baldwin Centre, Baldwin Township in the former County Annex Building. Dispatching services utilize state-of-the-art computer systems to receive emergency calls and to direct fire, police, and ambulance units to the emergency scene. A: You have to be eighteen (18) years of age and possess a valid Michigan Drivers License. Your driving record must be satisfactory and you cannot have any felony convictions on file. You must be in good physical condition. You must have competent vehicle transportation. You must be a State Certified Fire Fighter or be State Certified within a year of being hired by a Fire Department. State Certification requires approximately 160 hours of State Certified Training.
A: This varies depending on the turnover within the Department. The Department has a maximum allowed membership of 30 persons. Usually when the Department is down two or more members, an ad is placed in the local newspaper and applications are accepted. Oral interviews are conducted after reviewing the applicants and their resumes and personnel are hired after being reviewed by the Department and the Township Board.
A: The Oscoda Fire Department responds to an average of about 125 calls for assistance per year which includes fires, vehicle accidents, water rescues, fire alarms, hazardous material spills, and general assistance.
